Qattara Depression

The Qattara Depression is a vast natural lowland located in the Western Desert of Matrouh Governorate in Egypt. The depression extends from east to west, with its eastern edge approaching the Mediterranean Sea near El Alamein. Its area is approximately 20,000 square kilometers, with a length of about 300 km and a width of 150 km at its widest point. The depression begins about 100 km south of El Alamein.

The Qattara Depression is the second lowest point in Africa after Lake Assal in Djibouti, with an elevation of approximately 135 meters (443 feet) below sea level. It covers around 19,605 square kilometers (7,570 square miles), which is comparable in size to Lake Ontario or twice the area of Lebanon. Due to its size and proximity to the Mediterranean coast, studies have been conducted regarding the possibility of hydroelectric power generation.
