Ashtum El-Jamal Reserve and Tinnis Island were declared a natural reserve in 1998. It is located along the coastal road between Port Said and Damietta, seven kilometers west of Port Said city. The reserve includes “Bu Gazi (2) El-Gamal” (both new and old), “Ashtum El-Jamal,” and through these gates, salty waters from the Mediterranean Sea enter Lake Manzala. The lake is characterized by a diversity of ecological systems, which enhances its biological diversity. Additionally, there are some islands scattered within the lake covered with distinctive vegetation.
The reserve extends from kilometer 6 to kilometer 13, penetrating three kilometers into Lake Manzala. Tinnis Island is located within Lake Manzala, seven kilometers southwest of Port Said, including the Tinnis archaeological mound, and is surrounded by a water arc spanning 300 meters.
The area of the reserve is approximately 35 square kilometers, while Tinnis Island covers about 8 square kilometers. The reserve is characterized by a moderate summer climate, warm winters, and coastal areas that receive winter rainfall.
