Within the framework of the “Green Generation” program, which is part of the Ecoris Foundation for Sustainable Development, the first camp titled “Guardians of the Environment” was organized on August 28th. The camp targeted children aged 6 to 14 years old and included workshops on farming skills, recycling organic waste, and converting it into compost. Additionally, a variety of sports and recreational activities were provided to enhance the concept of sustainability among the participating children.

What is Intensity and the Mercalli Intensity Scale?

The amount of shaking that occurs on the surface due to an earthquake is called the intensity. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,…IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.
Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.

Earthquake statistics

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 54 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 27.2 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):

  • Mag. 7 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 62.5 years)
  • Mag. 6 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 41.7 years)
  • Mag. 5 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 41.7 years)
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 0.31 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 3.2 years)
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 4.8 quakes per year
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 15.9 quakes per year
  • Mag. 1 or higher: 26.8 quakes per year

The area where this quake occurred has a high level of seismic activity. It has had at least 2 quakes above magnitude 7 since 1900, which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently, probably on average approximately every 60 to 65 years.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 2,2 magnitude earthquake struck the area of Califon, New Jersey on Wednesday morning

It may have been hard to tell, but New Jersey was hit by an earthquake early Wednesday morning.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck the area of Califon, New Jersey at about 5:44 a.m. on Wednesday.

It would be the fifth earthquake to hit that area since the beginning of July.

No injuries were reported due to the earthquake as of about 2:30 p.m.

Earlier this year, on April 5, 2024, a 4.8 magnitude quake hit New Jersey, and in following days and months dozens of aftershocks and tremors have been reported, according to the USGS.

Earthquakes in the eastern U.S. are not common but when they occur, the impact is felt stronger and across a wider area than quakes in the western part of the country, according to the USGS.

Part of that could be that the eastern U.S. has older rocks and formations, the USGS said.

Ecoris Foundation organized a training workshop “Environment and Climate Change” in Minya Governorate from June 6th to 8th, in collaboration with Our Earth Climate Foundation for Sustainable Development and the Integral Development Action of Minia (IDAM). The workshop targeted youth from the villages of Minya.

On the first and second days, the training was led by Eng.Ali Samir, a consultant in development and arts, and the Secretary-General of Our Earth Climate for Sustainable Development Foundation. The training on the first day focused on the theme of sustainability and its importance, along with our role in environmental conservation. Ideas were exchanged, and artistic presentations were delivered on challenges such as resource wastage and increased consumption.

On the second day, the focus shifted to the negative impacts of climate change on our daily lives, accompanied by the presentation of initial solutions. Discussions revolved around issues of water pollution, waste management, social responsibility, and the significance of recycling and natural resource management.

On the third day, the environmental lawyer Mr.Ahmed El Saiedy led the training. Participants were trained on mechanisms for monitoring and documenting environmental violations, as well as environmental litigation methods. The youth formed working groups and actively monitored some environmental violations, displaying great enthusiasm and commitment to taking positive steps to address and prevent such violations.

A volcano on the remote island of Halmahera erupted massively and sent a cloud of ash into the sky, prompting authorities to evacuate residents from seven nearby villages, Indonesian authorities said on Sunday.

Ibo volcano erupted on Saturday evening, sending ash four kilometers high, with lines of purple lightning appearing around the crater, according to information and photos published by the Indonesian Volcanology Agency.

Abdul Mahari of the National Disaster Management Authority said in a statement that a joint team of police, army and search and rescue officials had been sent to the area to evacuate residents from surrounding villages.

Pictures published by the authority showed assistance operations for the elderly, and residents were transported in small trucks to shelters during the night.

The authority did not provide any information about the number of people transported, but the authorities recommended evacuating an area with a radius of seven kilometers.

Indonesia’s volcanology agency raised the warning level for the volcano to the highest level on Thursday, after it erupted several times earlier this month.

Ibo’s activity comes in the wake of a series of different volcanic eruptions in Indonesia, which is located on the so-called “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean and has 127 active volcanoes.
